The King of Ys” is a historical fantasy series written by Poul and Karen Anderson, with “Roma Mater” being the first book in the series. The story follows Gaius Gratillonius, a Roman centurion, who is sent to the mysterious and magical land of Ys. In Ys, he becomes the new king after defeating the previous ruler in a duel and marries the nine “Gallicenae” or “wives” of the former king. The series explores themes of cultural clash, political intrigue, and the struggle to reconcile the old and new worlds.
